Horny Goat Weed in Stallion Power: Epimedium, Icariin and the Evidence

Quick answer

Horny goat weed is the herb epimedium, and it is the last of nine lines in the Stallion Power blend. Its main studied compound, icariin, may mildly inhibit PDE5 in lab work, but human evidence is limited. By our label arithmetic one gummy holds 5 mg or less. People with heart disease should avoid it.

The basics01

What is horny goat weed in Stallion Power?

Horny goat weed is the common name for several Epimedium species, a group of flowering herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine. The compound studied most is icariin.

The Stallion Power label lists Horny Goat Weed Extract ninth and last in its 82 mg proprietary blend. No amount is printed.

The sales page names it, with no amount and no directions in text (Stallion Power sales page).

The math02

How much horny goat weed is in one gummy?

At most 5 mg, by our arithmetic. Last place in a blend means no heavier than the line above it, and that chain ends at the printed 5 mg of caffeine.

A blend lists its parts from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)). These are ceilings worked out from the label order, not lab results.

How the label order caps each line of the 82 mg blend. A blend must list its parts from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)). Caffeine is printed as 5 mg and sits fifth, so everything after it weighs 5 mg or less, and everything before it shares the other 77 mg.
PlaceLabel lineMost it can weighWhy
1Muira puama extractAt most about 77 mgThe first line can be at most everything except the caffeine: 77 mg.
2Maca extractAt most about 38 mgTwo lines at least this heavy, so at most half of 77 mg.
3Catuaba extractAt most about 25 mgThree lines at least this heavy: at most a third of 77 mg.
4Green tea extractAt most about 19 mgFour lines at least this heavy: at most a quarter of 77 mg.
5Caffeine5 mgPrinted on the label: 5 mg.
6AshwagandhaAt most about 5 mgListed after the 5 mg caffeine, so it cannot weigh more than that.
7L-arginineAt most about 5 mgListed after the 5 mg caffeine, so it cannot weigh more than that.
8Tribulus terrestrisAt most about 5 mgListed after the 5 mg caffeine, so it cannot weigh more than that.
9Horny goat weed extractAt most about 5 mgListed last, so it cannot weigh more than the caffeine.

Lines 1-4 must add up to 77 mg minus nothing else: 82 mg total, less 5 mg caffeine, less at most 20 mg for lines 6-9, leaves at least 57 mg for lines 1-4. This is our arithmetic from the label order, not a lab test. The label also says the blend is equivalent to about 567 mg of dry powders, which describes the starting plant material, not the finished amounts.

Horny goat weed is place 9. See the other lines on the ingredients page.

Icariin03

What is icariin, and does it work like an ED drug?

Icariin is a plant compound from epimedium. In lab studies it may mildly inhibit PDE5, the enzyme that prescription sildenafil and tadalafil block (MSKCC, Epimedium (horny goat weed)).

That is a lab finding. Memorial Sloan Kettering calls the evidence limited and mostly lab-based (MSKCC, Epimedium (horny goat weed)). We found no trial of Stallion Power.

Prescription ED drugs are tested at set doses and need a prescription (MedlinePlus, Sildenafil) (MedlinePlus, Tadalafil). A mild effect in a dish does not make an herb act like them, and we do not say it does.

Heart caution04

Is horny goat weed safe for the heart?

Not for everyone. It can cause sweating, a fast or irregular heartbeat and mood changes, and case reports describe heart-rhythm problems (MSKCC, Epimedium (horny goat weed)). People with heart disease are advised to avoid it.

At 5 mg or less per gummy, the amount is small. But the effect depends on the person, and the product mixes it with 5 mg of caffeine and other herbs.

Heart disease

Ask your doctor before any blend that contains epimedium.

Palpitations

Stop and call your doctor if your heartbeat races or skips, as the label says to do for any reaction.

Nitrates or PDE5 drugs

Ask first; these medicines already act on blood pressure (MedlinePlus, Sildenafil).

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Do not stop or skip a prescription because you started a gummy. Tell your care team about everything you take (FDA, Mixing medications and supplements).

The evidence05

Does horny goat weed help erectile dysfunction?

We cannot say it does. The research is limited, and most of it is lab-based rather than a trial in men (MSKCC, Epimedium (horny goat weed)).

Reviews of ED supplements find the same pattern across blends: a recognized herb, a tiny dose and no test of the finished product (Petre 2023, ED supplements review).

The sales page says the gummy can "Naturally and effectively support sexual health". No study on the page backs that, and natural does not mean safe (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements: What You Need To Know).

Persistent erection trouble can point to heart or blood-sugar problems, which a clinician can check (Mayo Clinic, Erectile dysfunction).

Hidden drugs06

Could a gummy sold as an epimedium blend hide a real drug?

In this category, it has happened. FDA has found undeclared sildenafil or tadalafil in products sold for male enhancement (FDA, Tainted sexual enhancement products) (Tucker 2018, FDA tainted supplements).

We have not tested Stallion Power and no lab report is published. We have no sign it contains a drug. See hidden drug warnings.

Next07

How does horny goat weed compare with L-arginine?

L-arginine has human trials at gram doses. Horny goat weed has mostly lab work. Both sit at 5 mg or less in the gummy.

Read L-arginine in Stallion Power next, or check the side effects page for when to stop and call a doctor.

FAQ08

Horny goat weed in Stallion Power: common questions

How much horny goat weed is in Stallion Power?

The label does not print it. As the ninth and last line of the blend, it can weigh 5 mg at most per gummy, by our arithmetic from the label order. It could be less.

What is icariin?

Icariin is the plant compound from epimedium that researchers study most. In lab work it may mildly inhibit PDE5 (MSKCC, Epimedium (horny goat weed)). The Stallion Power label does not say how much icariin the extract holds.

Does horny goat weed work like Viagra?

No evidence shows that. Sildenafil is a tested prescription drug (MedlinePlus, Sildenafil), while horny goat weed has limited, mostly lab-based evidence (MSKCC, Epimedium (horny goat weed)). Stallion Power is a supplement and not an ED drug.

Is horny goat weed safe with heart disease?

People with heart disease are advised to avoid it, because case reports describe an irregular heartbeat (MSKCC, Epimedium (horny goat weed)). Ask your doctor before using any blend that contains epimedium.

What are the side effects of horny goat weed?

Reported effects include sweating, a fast or irregular heartbeat and mood changes (MSKCC, Epimedium (horny goat weed)). Stop and consult your doctor if any adverse reaction occurs, as the Stallion Power label says.

Is epimedium the same as horny goat weed?

Yes. Epimedium is the plant genus, and horny goat weed is its common name. The Stallion Power sales page uses both terms, while the label says Horny Goat Weed Extract (Stallion Power sales page).

Can horny goat weed be taken with ED medicine?

Ask a doctor first. Both act on the same pathway in theory, and prescription PDE5 drugs have strict warnings, including no use with nitrates (MedlinePlus, Sildenafil) (MedlinePlus, Tadalafil). Keep taking your prescription as directed.
