MedlinePlus says your doctor will probably tell you not to take tadalafil if you take nitrates, or the medicine riociguat (MedlinePlus, Tadalafil). The warning for sildenafil is the same (MedlinePlus, Sildenafil).
A sharp drop in pressure can cause dizziness, fainting or worse. That is why the warning is firm and not a matter of preference.

Which medicines are nitrates?
Nitrates are medicines for chest pain from heart disease, such as nitroglycerin and isosorbide.
MedlinePlus names nitroglycerin and isosorbide dinitrate or mononitrate (MedlinePlus, Sildenafil). The warning also covers nitrate street drugs sold as "poppers" (MedlinePlus, Tadalafil).
